ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered more than 3 million of Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 workstation cards, worth more than $35 billion at list price, and Nvidia has warned it may fill only a fraction of the orders, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Amazon said on Monday that its Trainium chips will run ordinary PyTorch code after a single configuration change, a direct attempt to weaken the software habit that keeps buyers on Nvidia, while Anthropic is offering Blackstone a return above 10 percent to help finance $60 billion of Google chips. In north Florida, Gilchrist County became the latest county to pause data-center projects for a year.

The most telling order of the week is for a card that was never meant for a server farm. Nvidia built the RTX PRO 5500 for engineers and designers, and Chinese cloud companies now want millions of them because export rules have closed the door on Nvidia's larger chips. For anyone hoping to run models at home, the lesson is that desk hardware and cluster hardware now come off the same production lines and are sold into the same shortage. Amazon's new software makes its own chips easier to adopt, but only by renting them, and Anthropic's offer of a double-digit return to Blackstone shows that the money behind central computing is getting dearer. Where ordinary residents still have leverage is the county commission, and several in north Florida are now pausing new server farms while they write rules.

ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered more than 3 million of Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 cards, priced at about $11,400 each, because it is among the most powerful Nvidia chips still sold to Chinese buyers, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Nvidia has told partners it cannot guarantee the orders, and one source said they might receive only 5 to 10 percent of the quantities requested.
-- A card designed for an engineer's workstation is being bought by the million to run chatbots in Chinese server farms, with total Chinese orders above 6 million against a reported ceiling of 3 million cards worldwide in 2027. When cluster buyers absorb a desk-class part, the professionals who wanted one for their own machines wait in the same queue.

Amazon said on Monday that TorchNeuron, software built by its Annapurna Labs chip unit, lets developers run existing PyTorch code on its Trainium2 and Trainium3 chips with a single configuration change. The company said it will release the code as open source at the PyTorch Conference North America on Tuesday.
-- Nvidia's hold on AI buyers rests as much on a decade of software as on its chips, and Amazon is attacking that software habit directly. Trainium is rented only inside Amazon's cloud, so a weaker Nvidia here means a stronger landlord, not a cheaper machine on anyone's desk.

Anthropic is offering Blackstone a total return of more than 10 percent to help finance a $60 billion package of AI chip purchases, DigiTimes reported, as higher financing costs make new computing capacity more expensive. The arrangement, reportedly code-named Project North Star, would pay for Google tensor processing units with a combined capacity of about 1.5 gigawatts.
-- A double-digit return is the price one of the leading AI labs must now offer outside lenders to keep adding cluster capacity. Dearer money makes central computing more expensive to build, but it has not yet slowed the orders.

Commissioners in Gilchrist County, Florida, voted unanimously on Monday night in Trenton to approve a one-year moratorium on AI data centers, WCJB reported. The county joins Levy County, which passed a temporary ban on large centers last month, and Putnam County, which banned medium and large projects.
-- With the city of Alachua also moving toward a moratorium, a cluster of north Florida governments is closing its land to server farms while it writes rules. Each pause narrows the cheap rural land near power lines that the largest builders are seeking.

Chinese cloud companies are buying a workstation card by the million for their server farms, and Amazon is trying to loosen Nvidia's grip from inside its own cloud; both strengthen the central side. Dearer financing for Anthropic and another county moratorium in Florida raise the cost of building clusters without stopping it, so the score holds at 83.
