Issue 45: Apple Ships Siri AI

Permanent copy of issue 45. Today's issue is always the front page.

Apple said iOS 27 is available starting September 14, with Siri AI rolling out in English on supported iPhones. Reports say Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have met since July on a private standards body after White House talks stalled. Chip shares fell on Monday after Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei called for slower model gains; SoftBank dropped 10 percent in Tokyo. Cohere chief executive Aidan Gomez published an essay Sunday calling that coordination a cartel.

Apple put a conversational assistant on the phone the household already owns, with usage limits and an English-only start. That is a desk product, not a smaller training run. The same morning, the three U.S. labs that rent the gigawatts were described as writing a testing club of their own, and Gomez named the legal ask: an antitrust waiver so they can agree on pace. Chip investors sold the suppliers. None of that moves a watt off the cluster. It does decide who sits in the room that says how fast the next model may be trained.

Apple ships Siri AI on iOS 27

Apple said iOS 27 is available starting September 14, with Siri AI rolling out in English on supported iPhones. Apple said the assistant can use personal context from mail, messages, and photos, take actions in apps, and that usage limits may apply.
-- A phone that answers at the desk is a path that does not put the household's mail on a rented cluster.

Labs discuss a private AI standards body

Seoul Economic Daily, citing The Information, said working groups from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have met since July on a voluntary industry standards body after White House talks stalled. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman told an all-hands meeting last week that major AI companies will have to create a standards body themselves without government support, the report said.
-- If the three labs that run the training runs also write the test, smaller shops and open weights take the rules they are given.

AI chip stocks fall after slowdown call

Chip and AI-linked shares fell on Monday after Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei called for slower model gains and other lab heads backed the idea. SoftBank fell 10 percent in Tokyo; SK Hynix closed down more than 6 percent; CNBC said U.S. premarket trading had Micron down about 5 percent, Intel nearly 6 percent, and Nvidia more than 2 percent.
-- Investors heard slower models as fewer racks; the household still pays the power bill either way.

Cohere chief calls lab safety pact a cartel

Cohere chief executive Aidan Gomez published an essay Sunday arguing that a handful of frontier labs should not write safety standards for the rest of the industry. Gomez said Anthropic's pacing plan asks governments for an antitrust waiver so competitors can agree on how fast the technology may advance, and called that structure a cartel.
-- A smaller lab saying the guest list is the point is the objection to a closed table.
