Issue 53: Xiaomi Opens MiMo Weights

Permanent copy of issue 53. Today's issue is always the front page.

Xiaomi said Tuesday it is releasing and open-sourcing the MiMo-V2.6 series and published a training bill of about $2.62 million for the larger run. SpaceXAI said Monday that Grok 4.7 is on its API at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, with the weights unreleased. Governor Gavin Newsom signed seven California bills that make data centers report water and power use and pay for the grid upgrades they cause. Kodiak Gas Services said it will supply 76 megawatts of natural-gas power to an unnamed West Texas data center for six years. The European Commission proposed ratings for data centers above 500 kilowatts, with labels expected in 2027.

The file a person can copy is the weights, not the hall. Xiaomi put the reinforcement-learning code next to the model and said the two runs covered roughly 750,000 trajectories in under six days. That figure is a lab invoice. It is not the charge on a residential meter. Grok stays on SpaceXAI's API. The California bills try to stop a data center from handing its substation bill to everyone else on the line. The West Texas engines are how one unnamed site plans to start before the utility queue clears.

Xiaomi open-sources MiMo-V2.6 weights

Xiaomi said Tuesday it is releasing and open-sourcing the MiMo-V2.6 series, including MiMo-V2.6-Pro and MiMo-V2.6-Flash, and published the weights, a technical report, and the reinforcement-learning code. The company said the Pro model scored 46.32 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, which it called the highest open-source mark on that board, and that the two training runs cost about $2.62 million and $0.85 million over roughly 750,000 trajectories in under six days.
-- A person can copy the weights; the training bill Xiaomi published is not the charge on a kitchen meter.

SpaceXAI ships Grok 4.7 on a closed API

SpaceXAI said Monday that Grok 4.7 is available in Cursor, Grok Build, and the Grok API, priced from $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, the same list price as Grok 4.6. The company said the model uses a larger base than Grok 4.6 and did not release the weights.
-- The lower list price is still a meter; a household cannot download this model.

Newsom signs seven data center bills

Governor Gavin Newsom said Monday he signed seven bills that require data centers to report water and electricity use and to pay for grid upgrades instead of shifting those costs onto other ratepayers. The package is AB 1577, AB 2383, AB 2469, AB 2619, SB 886, SB 887, and SB 1168.
-- The bills are aimed at the household electric bill, not at a new chip.

Kodiak contracts 76 megawatts of gas

Kodiak Gas Services said Monday it signed a six-year deal to supply 76 megawatts of on-site natural-gas power to a West Texas data center, using about 40 engines, with deployment starting in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company said the operator has a contract with an investment-grade cloud firm and that a chip designer guarantees the lease; it named neither company.
-- The hall gets power without waiting on the utility, and the neighbors still live next to the engines.

Brussels proposes data center energy labels

The European Commission said Monday it has proposed a common rating scheme for data centers above 500 kilowatts, covering energy use, water use, waste-heat reuse, and clean generation. The Commission said the first labels are expected in 2027, after Parliament and the Council review the text, and cited an International Energy Agency projection that data centers could use more than 3 percent of EU electricity by 2030.
-- A label in 2027 does not cut this month's power bill; it tells a town what the hall consumes.
